What is snifter valves?

Snifter valves, also known as venting valves or automatic air vents, are small valves used in plumbing and HVAC systems to control the flow of air or gas. They are usually installed near the high point of a piping system to automatically remove air or gas that may accumulate there.

The snifter valve typically has a float mechanism and a spring-loaded cap. When air or gas accumulates in the piping system, it rises to the snifter valve and lifts the float, which in turn opens the valve. The air or gas is then vented out, allowing the water or other fluid to flow through the pipes unobstructed.

Snifter valves are particularly useful in systems where air or gas pockets can cause damage or reduce efficiency, such as in water distribution networks, hydronic heating systems, and compressed air systems. They are also used in many industries, including manufacturing, oil and gas, and agriculture.

Regular maintenance of snifter valves is important to ensure their proper functioning. If they become clogged or damaged, air or gas may not be vented properly, resulting in reduced system efficiency or even damage to the pipes.
